Pizza Professionals in the Making

Can a 4th grader start a pizza restaurant?

Two Citizens Federal team members and a class of elementary students spent their morning trying to answer that very question.

Joenee and Heidi from Citizens Federal spoke to Mrs. McCormick's 4th-grade class at Benjamin Logan Elementary about starting a business. Instead of only talking, they let students learn by experience, reflecting on real-life situations as they attempted to start their own hypothetical business.

The students decided their business would be a pizza restaurant, undoubtedly inspired by local favorites. With their business choice made, their story continued.

With the pizza business chosen, students took on roles. They worked together to create a business plan, describing competitors and listing start-up costs.

Next, the essential entrepreneurial question: Do we have enough money to start? For our soon-to-be pizza tycoons, the answer was no. Their first solution? Raise capital from investors.

The students presented their plan to potential investors and successfully convinced all to join their quest for glory and delicious pizza.

Even with investors, they needed more funds. They met with their community bank to request a loan. They explained their business and the necessary amount, and the bank granted the loan after deliberation.

With new funds, they bought supplies, hired staff, and secured a prime location. Excitement grew as opening day arrived.

Open for business! The celebration was short, and the students quickly got to work running their restaurant, serving pizzas, and greeting customers with enthusiasm.

After the grand opening, they reviewed finances and paid rent, staff, suppliers, investors, and the bank. They earned a profit!

Joenee and Heidi discussed how a business should use profits: plan for future expenses, cost increases, new equipment, or expansion.

Fun, profit, and experience were gained by all. Thanks to Benjamin Logan Elementary and Mrs. McCormick’s class for inviting us to share our passion for financial literacy.
